Typically you can place anywhere from 50-100 pounds in the trunk of your vehicle while it is being transported. As auto transporters are not technically licensed to carry any sort of household goods, any times put into the trunk are taken with an "out of sight, out of mind" mentality, as transporters don't generally look in the trunk of the vehicles they are shipping unless told to do so by someone of authority (for instance, a highway patrolman or the like). Therefore, when putting personal items in your vehicle make sure that you have absolutely no more than 100 pounds of items in your trunk. We generally recommend shipping clothes and linens, as they are generally light and a full trunk of them is less than 100 pounds, on the whole.
You should also be aware that no items in your trunk will be insured during transport. This stems directly from the fact that transporters are not licensed to carry household goods - and if they are not licensed to carry household goods they certainly aren't insured for household goods transport. This is also why we recommend shipping only clothes and linens - anything that can break, or that is expensive or difficult to replace, should definitely be shipped another way. Though transporters do their best to take care of the vehicles on their trucks and make sure that no one does anything, instances of things being stolen off the cars in their car have occurred. Is it rare? Of course. Transporters don't look in the trunks of their vehicles and they make sure to keep the doors locked at all times, but crowbar + window = easy access to a vehicle.
